Hand-Painted Furniture: The Must-have Home Furnishings of the Season

Adorned with floral patterns, Asian motifs and other ethnic-inspired designs, hand-painted furniture and accessories are the must-have items of the season. Hand-painted home furnishings are taking center stage in the home, adding a world-inspired flare and style to the overall dcor, says Gary Babcock, vice president of merchandising and fashion at Arhaus Furniture, a 23-store lifestyle retailer of fine home furnishings.

Worldly influences

Hundreds of years ago, Egyptian artisans embellished everything from tables to pottery with colorful motifs to pass on ancient fables to future generations. Were seeing a resurgence of these hand-painted items as consumers look to add personal style to their home with unique pieces from around the world, says Babcock. Theyre embracing heirlooms and other richly decorated items that they see as authentic to a certain era or culture.

Today, influences in hand-painted home furnishings are widespread, coming from as far away as the Middle East, Europe and South America. Weve seen a variety of items wrapped with ethnic-inspired artwork, from a sideboard with a soft, delicate floral print inspired by Eastern Europe to an Asian armoire with clean, simplistic lines and finished in black and red with the added touch of painted landscapes and pictorials, says Babcock. Painting styles vary from region to region. From the palate of colors to the brush stroke, every region has its own influence. The uniqueness of the hand-painted piece is reflective of the individual artists background, as well as their talent.

Arhaus commissions gifted artisans from all over the world to give each hand-painted piece its own unique qualities and traits. For instance, the Sam Remo Armoire gets its charm from old world style cabinets reminiscent of those that can be found in the Italian villas of Tuscany. It features intricate, hand-painted floral accents and a distressed garnet finish achieved by applying several layers of multi-colored paints and lacquers. A matching cupboard and sideboard are adorned with the same hand-painted finish making the San Remo an exquisite collection.

Ethnic motifs

From attractive 19th-century Southwestern prints to those of Northern Sweden, there are a number of decorative motifs to choose from when incorporating elegant hand-painted pieces into the home. Artwork with Moroccan, Indonesian and Middle Eastern influences tends to be very ornate with rich, bright colors like cinnabar red, black and bronze, says Babcock. If the goal is to add a vibrant color or pattern to a specific room, but you are not ready to paint the walls, try adding hand-painted pieces from one of these regions to create a focal point or accent to the room.

To create a balanced, eclectic look with clean, ethnic-inspired collections, Babcock recommends introducing lavish hand-painted furnishings showing a variety of influences from all over the world. Its important to choose one piece to serve as a center piece or focal point in the room. This may be a large Venetian mirror with a handcrafted frame covered with Middle Eastern art to hang over the sofa or a grand vintage-inspired armoire with doors ornamented with lilies, Babcock added.

Ethnic-inspired accent pieces are becoming increasingly popular, especially mixed with contemporary furnishings. According to Babcock, there are no rules to decorating with hand-painted items. You can take an intricately painted console table like our Kartini Console and pair it with a handsome contemporary leather sofa and brushed chrome lamps. Accent the look with graphic pillows and a fur throw and you have a contemporary look full of color and texture, says Babcock.

Endless opportunities

With ethnic-inspired hand-painted home furnishings, the opportunities are endless. Below are suggestions from Babcock and the Arhaus team of interior design consultants as to how to incorporate these one-of-a-kind pieces into your dcor.

* Look for antique-looking pieces that bring a certain era or culture into the home. This adds a personal touch to your dcor, and because hand-painted furniture is such a big trend, its becoming easier to find unique pieces with a variety of ethnic influences.

* Introduce painted furniture that brings a new element of style and color into the space, adding an eclectic look. This piece doesnt necessary have to blend with the existing furnishings; its the subtle details like an accent color of paint on a coffee table duplicated in the pillows on a sofa or the beading on a lighting fixture that pull the entire look together.

* Mix more modern, contemporary styles with ethnic, antique-looking designs. For instance, take the Verona TV Cabinet by Arhaus. Go Easier on Yourself this Fall ARA(ARA) - Red, orange, yellow and brown; its time for autumn leaves to start falling down. This year, dont dread what the changing leaf colors signify; learn how to ease the strain and pain of raking -- falls most taxing task.

Your first step is to not rake -- yet. As you continue mowing on into the fall, you can bag many of those leaves, or mulch them if you have a mulching mower. Once youve stopped mowing for the season, however, its not recommended to mow only to mulch the leaves. When your grass has stopped growing, thats the time to address the leaves.

One tempting option in leaf removal is a leaf blower. While these gadgets might do the trick on dry leaves, leaves are often damp and in tighter spaces where the blower is inefficient. Gasoline-powered leaf blowers are also not environmentally friendly, and most models are quite noisy, rendering them not very neighborhood friendly either. Try an electric leaf blower only for areas that truly require them, such as the roof.

With the high-powered options out, looks like its back to good old-fashioned raking. When beginning to rake, first decide which leaves must go and which leaves can remain. Leaves can be left under trees and shrubs where they will compost themselves, so that when spring returns, you will need significantly less new bark mulch to cover the areas surrounding your trees and shrubbery. Research has shown that trees fair better when they have a mulched area surrounding them. The mulch will improve the trees health and increase its growth rate.

The leaves covering the majority of your lawn, however, need to be cleared away if you want decent grass come spring. You dont need to rake every time the wind blows, but waiting too long will make for much harder work. Selecting a proper rake can significantly reduce the amount of time you spend raking. For instance, the new Clog-Free Rake from Ames True Temper eliminates the frustration and inconvenience of stuck leaves at the end of the rake. When you venture into the yard to rake, remember to pace yourself and be careful of your back. Be sure to avoid back injury by moving your feet instead of standing in one spot and constantly bending and straightening. Be sure not to twist the trunk of your body as you rake. A proper raking procedure is to rake leaves straight back and move with the rake as you walk backwards. Take frequent breaks while you work, and give your back a good stretch by leaning backwards to reduce pain. Also switch hand positions periodically to reduce the amount of stress on one arm and side of the body.

If you already have back problems or know that raking always puts a strain on your back, look into purchasing a rake that is more ergonomically correct. Once youve gotten all those leaves together, consider making a compost of them to create mulch and fertilizer for the spring. Rake them towards the back of your yard or onto a vegetable bed if you have one, as long as you sprinkle on lime or ashes. Group them into piles approximately the size of two full garbage bags. You can also add summer flowers and plants youve pulled for the year as well as twigs and grass clippings. Just make sure to include a layer of dirt between each foot of leaves. Sprinkle the pile with cottonseed meal and water if its dry. Make sure to turn the pile once a month to ensure overall moisture dispersal.

If you dont have the space to compost and have to cart the leaves to your front lawn or need to bag them, consider using a wheelbarrow to do the hauling. For easier pick-up, Ames True Tempers Rake, Gather & Go has a detachable head that makes gathering leaves and grass clippings a cinch. When its time to gather the leaves, simply remove the detachable head and scoop it together with the rake for quick pickups. The detachable head clips easily onto the back of the rake for convenient storage.

Remember, while the task may be no day in the park, there are plenty of ways to make raking less taxing. Spread your work out and enlist help. Raking leaves with the family can lead to some wonderful romps in the piles for the kids. Or, enlist some of the neighborhood teenagers to aid in the chore. Get a Jump on Next Summers Backyard Entertaining by Starting Deck Construction Now ARA(ARA) - Autumn may signal the end of summer to some, but to others its just an early start to the next summer season. The kids are back in school, the chaise lounges have been stored away, and the garden flowers are losing their petals -- its time to strap on the tool belt and fire up the table saw.

According to deck builders across North America, there are several reasons fall is an ideal time to build, repair or expand a deck:

* The grilling, sunbathing and outdoor entertaining activities of the summer season have passed, so deck construction is less likely to disrupt the familys routine.

* An impressive new deck deserves an equally impressive landscape. By completing the deck in fall, landscaping can be done in spring when weather conditions are ideal for planting, and a wider variety of plants are available.

* A soggy or harsh winter can do extensive damage to already decaying deck boards. Repairing rotting decks in autumn prevents such hazardous damage from occurring. Western Red Cedar products from CedarOne are excellent products to use for a deck as Cedar is naturally resistant to decay and harsh weather, so your deck can last up to two times longer than with other materials.

Another option against decay is to build with alternative decking materials such as wood composites made from wood fibers and recycled plastics. * With the kids back in school, saws and electrical tools pose less of a safety hazard for young ones.

* New wood decks need time to cure before the application of sealers, paints and stains. Building in the fall ensures ample time between construction and staining, as there are generally less social engagements to hurry the project along. Homeowners who build with engineered decking materials, however, will enjoy a low-maintenance deck free from curing times, sealing, staining or painting. * In balmy areas of the United States, the outdoor entertaining season extends through the end of fall. By building in fall, homeowners in warm weather climates can still get a few months of outdoor entertaining in before the weather becomes too chilly.

* Perhaps your old deck is still in good shape, but needs a new railing? Why not consider a state-of-the-art decorative railing system made of composite materials. These railing systems offer the same low maintenance option as the decking planks. It is hard to distinguish the difference between many of the composite railing systems, but one difference is pre-grooved railing in the ChoiceDek product, which saves time and money. You can run wires inside the handrail or bottom rail to enjoy beautiful outdoor lights or audio systems.

* Because fall is typically a slower season for contractors, homeowners may be able to save time and money. By having a deck built in the slower fall months, people can avoid lag time, and may even be able to get a price break.

So peruse your favorite building and remodeling magazines, invest in a deck-design software program or hire a contractor. Whatever you do, be sure to get outside and take advantage of autumns window of opportunity for deck building or repair.

The AM3 mount is solidly constructed and the price we paid on Amazon was very reasonable compared with other on-line and in-store retailers. It was simple to install and works perfectly with my Sony Bravia KDL-40V2500.



Initially, the joints were so stiff I had difficulty moving the arms... and I bench 300. It was all but impossible for my wife to budge it. I went to the Premiere Mounts web site and submitted a question about the problem and the company's customer support rep wrote back to tell me adjusting the tension was as easy as popping the plastic caps off the joints and loosening the bolts inside - a useful tip which is absent from the accompanying installation manual. The mount still feels very solid but it's now much easier to manipulate.



Really, my only complaint is the lack of detailed illustrations in the installation manual. Because the pictures in the manual were so small, we had to resort to looking at the pictures on the outside of the box to determine the proper installation of some components. I later discovered the Premier Mounts web site has better manuals you can download from their site.



I'd definitely buy it again and have already steered another customer to Amazon for a purchase.
